The Value of Temporary Assignments

In this economic climate and with this employment market, there are candidates out there that may be at a crossroads. With companies downsizing, there are some very viable candidates that are in the current market with years of experience and marketable skills. These are often workers who have been downsized, or perhaps have taken early retirement options. While searching for their next career move, they discover out of necessity to keep working or simply to stay sharp.

Is temping a good move? Absolutely. Temp work is a perfect chance for a candidate to try out different roles, work in different industries, even add new skills and experience to their resume. Another great reason is to build your network. Creating a strong network and keeping solid relationships could be the glue that keeps it together and opens up new doors.

A temporary assignment gives you a perfect way to “test the waters”. Getting first hand experience gives you great insight into the industry, the companies you hope to work for and puts you in line to work permanently, while building your skill set. You want to stay viable, to keep earning and to aggressively further your career.  The longer you remain out of work, the more difficult it can be to get hired. Historically, companies don’t want to hire candidates that have been out of work for long periods of time for many reasons. Sometimes it is as simple as they are not used to the daytime schedules, their lifestyle changes and even standing for long periods of time could cause a problem. It is best to keep working, keep gaps off your resumé and stay focused on the future.

If you aren’t thinking of career changing or need a new job as soon as possible, here are other reasons why a  temporary assignment may be worth it:

  • Going to a temp job everyday keeps you on a schedule, keeps you actively thinking and keeps your head up.
  • Working and connecting with people keeps you motivated and increases your chances of getting hired by that company or another that can use your skills.
  • Gets you a paycheck. You have experience and can offer employers skills and benefits of not having to train and wait out the learning curve.
  • Builds your professional network. Relationships are important, especially now. Use your network and invest in those connections.
  • Build references for future employers to contact about what you’ve been up to lately.
  • Keeps your resume viable. Gaping holes are not good on anyone’s resumé.
  • It is exciting! Short term expectations, quick projects that you can go in and be successful at. There is freedom in feeling that you are not tied down to that one job permanently.

When you are going to work everyday and earning a paycheck, you just feel better. You keep your confidence up. So while looking for your dream job, keep the engines running and your focus on the prize!

How’s Your Work Ethic?

From students to career veterans, work ethic can mean the difference between getting ahead to not getting a thing. If you are constantly adding valuable experience to your resume, adding positive referrals to your network, and keeping your eyes open for opportunity, growth will be in your future. From the very beginning of your pursuit, students should consider finding valuable positions within firms or organizations that you think may add value. Start early making contacts and solidifying relationships with people in the company. Make a commitment to becoming a valuable resource for them. It may lead to a guaranteed position on your next college break or better still, a job when you graduate.

Employers want to see initiative and consistency. Gaps in your resume are not the greatest. Some gaps are justifiable, but no matter why there is time off from the work world, there should also be proof of personal growth. For instance, if there is a layoff and you decide to further your education or training, or perhaps you have focused on a family. You can consider continuing your education or volunteering in hopes of resuming a career at some point. Staying focused on a growth pattern and connected to your community can make a difference.

Gaps on your resume will be addressed in the interview process at every company that you seek employment from, so be aware and plan ahead. Most employers want to hire someone with experience, so right out of the collegiate gates, it is you against the experienced ones that get a step up by interning or working hard to make connections during school. You can graduate with 4 years of experience, a full network of contacts and on top of your game…or you can see what opportunities are left over after determined people get hired. We all have choices and employers love to see a history of hard work and accomplishments.

Using Twitter and Google+ to Your Advantage

For clients and candidates: Do you use Twitter and Google+ in your job search process or as a small business?

Millions of people worldwide network regularly using social media. At first you may not think Twitter and Google+ are the most popular tools when it comes to job searching, but you are missing their value! TWITTER can be a valuable for watching industry trends and news. Simply, set up a list of various industry sources and companies, and watch it over time. Try Hootsuite or Tweetdeck so you can see everything. My preference is Tweetdeck because I like the interface better. If you are not managing accounts and looking for more than watching, the latter is the best bet. By following industry leaders, you can get their take on the industry and educate yourself. Watch their tweets and heck, interact yourself if you have ideas, opinions or something smart to say. That what Twitter is for. You may put something out there and get a response. Your tweets represent you and this is a great opportunity to grow your network.

GOOGLE+ is also very useful, especially as businesses need to incorporate the service for Google SEO. Small business owners should have a strong presence on the site, which is perfect for you-information about the company, its culture and insight. Bigger companies are represented in bigger ways, but Google+ is a must for smaller businesses. It is a quick and easy way to get your business some SEO. Map your business address on Google Maps and imbed that on your website. Google loves when you use Google stuff! Doing these two best practices is overlooked by so many. If you want to grow your business or even survive, you must be proactive. Use social media. Use your people skills. Growing your network could ultimately grow your business.
